| IN SHORT: The
Worldwide Mobile Market in a Nutshell |
With the mobile market reaching maturity (eight out of ten
people now own a mobile phone and penetration rates have already
surpassed 100 % in some countries), growth in the more advanced markets
will now largely be driven by value-added services, particularly over
the new 3G networks.
Although the major mobile markets are all moving in a common
direction, some differences between countries remains.
Worldwide, the three largest mobile markets are China, The United
States and Japan. Despite having the second largest poilation, India is
only expected to reach 50 million end users by 2006.
In Europe, Russia has joined the ranks of those countries with the
largest mobile markets, alongside Germany (still in first place) and
Italy (which drops into third place).
On the one hand, we have countries with a real potential for
considerable future growth that are just beginning to make their mark on
the worldwide market. The markets in some of these countries have
already reached a significant size, notably in Russia and China: both
these countries recorded tremendous growth in 2004, with around 30
million new users each.
On the other hand, we have a second group of countries where
continued growth is much slower and is mainly driven by renewal. In
these countries end-users are encouraged to have more than one phone
(personal and professional) or to have several prepaid cards in order to
get the cheapest rates. In Sweden and in Italy, for instance, the
penetration rate exceeds 100 % and the market is still growing.
Arphiola have the knowledge about the world`s main mobile markets
through our customers. We can offer a huge distribution for our
sub-suppliers reaching the mass marked and at the same time create
content packages adapted to the distinctive character of one
single market.
